If you are looking for ideas for your trip to Roatan, here are 5 things we just did while visiting this island.
Visit the Mangrove – A perfect way to catch a glimpse of the genuinely friendly people of Roatan as they go about their daily lives, far away from West Bay and the touristy part of the island.
Drive to the town of Oakridge, where you will find water taxi’s who can take you on a 3 hours tour for $40 for two people. This included stopping for lunch at the Hole in the Wall restaurant.
Oakridge is a picturesque town built over the water. The main way the people get around is by water taxi whether going to school, church, or the store a boat is needed. During our tour, we dropped someone off to the other side and picked up a teacher at the school, to take her to the other side of the water. It’s a great way to see how the people of Roatan live in this village.
The mangrove tunnels are not to be missed. It was our favorite activity we did while in Roatan. We did not realize until later, he would have taken us snorkeling if we would have brought our equipment. We will definitely be back on our next trip to try the snorkeling as we passed many reefs on our tour.
Zip Line – There are several zip line outfits on Roatan. If you have never tried it now is the time. Our last line we rode double, which was alot of fun.
Hire a Water Taxi – It is easy to take a water taxi from West Bay to West End. Only $3 per person. If you are there for a day or a week, make time to check both places out as they are totally different.
Did you know the water taxi will also take you on snorkeling trips? When we got back to West Bay, I asked if he did snorkeling trips to the Blue Channel, and he quoted me a rate, and I said no, knowing the rate was too high. He lowered it to $30 for two to take us snorkeling. He waited while we went to grab our gear. While we were gone, he got a friend to come with us, as someone has to stay on the boat and the other person took us around to the sites, which I thought was nice because we were out in the middle of the ocean. We made a stop at West End to pick up a ladder for the boat and were on our way. We spent about an hour snorkeling before we told him we wanted to go back as I was getting cold. What a great time.
Night Diving – We watched the divers leave from Infinity Bay pier every night. No need to get on a boat. After a couple nights of watching them, J decides he wanted to do it. I am not a diver, but J really loved it. Nothing like taking a flashlight and exploring under the water at night. It is really something to experience if you are a diver. He is still talking about it.
Take a day trip to Cayos Cochinos. This trip gave us a peak into authentic island living. We had an authentic Honduran home-cooked meal on the island. Fresh caught snapper, beans and rice, and plantains. This is a day trip you will never forget.
TIP: Bring plenty of cash as it was used for some of these trips, as some vendors do not accept credit cards.
