We were excited to be going to the Cayman Islands for a week.
When the alarm went off at 2:00 a.m. we were ready to start our vacation. After making sure we had everything, we put our luggage in the car and we were on our way by 3 a.m., heading to the park and ride. As we were entering the lot, we noticed that the bus was just leaving. No worries, it gave us more time to gather our luggage, put the sun screen in the window and making sure we did not forget anything. We waited about 15 minutes for another bus. There was only one other person on the bus heading to the airport. Not many people out this early in the morning. They dropped us off at American Airline for check in. We did not have to wait long and quickly checked our one bag. We were upgraded to exit row seats. Yeah, more legroom. What a great start to vacation. We walked over to the security line, but it was not open. They usually open around 4:30, but today they were late. The line was not to long and once security opened, the lines moved quickly. After arriving at the gate we found out the flight was a full flight and they were offering to check your bag at the gate. They were checking baggage sizes, and to make sure you only carried two items on board.
Once on board, we noticed four middle seats near the exit row, blocked with a tray table. I did not find out until later that week while reading a blogger on line, why these seats were blocked. Blocking these four seats allows the airline to have one less flight attendant on the plane. This is the first I have seen this. The flight was full and people were not happy to see the blocked seats. See picture below.
The flight left on time and we were on our way to Miami for a 2 ½ hour layover. This airport is a large airport and there are plenty of places to walk around and grab a bit to eat. The flight from Miami to Cayman Islands left on time. It’s a short jaunt over to Cayman. Once we landed we set our clocks back an hour. There were several planes on the tarmac when we arrived. By the time we got to the custom line, it was really long. It took a while to get through.
When we finally got through to pick up our luggage, it had been taken off the belt and was waiting for us. After we retrieved our luggage, out the door we went to Andy’s Car Rental. Andy’s is right across the street from the airport. There are signs pointing the way. I was glad we did not have much luggage to wheel to the car rental. (Located in the right of the first picture below where the trees are.)
We walked in and were quickly taken care of. We gave them our reservation number and our international driver’s license. They processed our paper work and brought the car around. After going over the car to check for dents, we were ready to go. While loading our luggage, we ended up putting some of it in the back seat as we reserved a small car. It was a good thing that there were only two of us. Leaving the lot, J had to remember to stay to the left. There was a small sign on the inside window on the driver’s side to remind you to drive on the left.
We headed to Sunshine Suites which would be our home for the week. It was too early to check in, we decided to grab some lunch at Sunshine Café. It was almost 1:00 and the place was packed with 5 couples waiting for tables. They told us if a bar seat became available, we could sit there. Lucky for us, we only had to wait 15 minutes for a couple to leave the bar.
As soon as we sat down, they got our drinks and we placed our order, a snapper sandwich and Thai chicken wrap. I was hungry and started eating my wrap before I took a picture, but it was so good I ordered another one later in the week and you will see that in another post. It took about 20 minutes for the food, but it was fresh and delicious. I can see why they consistently make one of the top places to eat on Seven Mile Beach. After our meal, they provide you with a free baby ice cream cone, which hit the spot. By the time we left, people were still waiting for a table.
We walked over to reception to check in. The friendly staff took care of us immediately, even though it was before check in. We were assigned a studio room on the second floor away from the noise. They had a bottle of wine in our room to celebrate our anniversary, which was a nice touch. We unpacked our bags, changed clothes and walked over to Seven Mile Beach to relax and enjoy the beautiful beach for the remainder of the day.
