Climbing The 99 Steps in Charlotte Amalie St Thomas, is a great photo op if you are walking around St Thomas.
The historic 99 steps, which is really 103 steps (we counted) is a good workout, if you have the energy. I would not recommend these steps if you have problems walking or if you have small children, since some of the steps and handrails are in need of repair.
As you climb the steps you are bordered by lush vegetation, beautiful flowers, and historic houses. Once you get closer to the top you will see the surrounding islands and the beautiful harbor of St Thomas.
If you have time, stop off and visit the Brittannia House and BlackBeard’s Castle, which are along the way. After reaching the top, walk around and explore, before heading back down the steps. Going down seems much easier to us. If you do not want to take the steps again, take a cab from BlackBeard’s Castle back down the hill. The cabs will be waiting around BlackBeard’s Castle, which is located at the top of the 99 steps. The view from the top is worth a trip up the hill!
