We spent one week in Germany and Austria before traveling to Switzerland for our second week.
I did a separate report on our costs for Switzerland, which you can view here. The exchange rate for the Euro was 1.12 as of September 2015.
We flew into Munich and out of Zurich using frequent flyer miles. This will show our costs for our week in Germany, Austria and then the total for the two weeks combined.
We spent two nights in Munich before picking up a car at the train station for the rest of our week in Germany/Austria. There is much talk about renting a car versus using the trains, but we were glad we rented a car. The convenience of getting around and changing plans due to weather made it much easier.
After we left Munich we drove to Salzburg, Austria and spent two nights. By having a car we were able to leave early in the morning to drive to Hallstatt Austria for the day. We both agreed we would love to come back and see more of this gorgeous country.
We left Salzburg and continued on to Garmisch for three nights. Getting an early start and driving to Ludwig castles before the crowds was worth it. We were able to see more by having a car and not being dependent on the train/bus schedule. We dropped off our car near the train station in Garmisch before taking the train to Switzerland for the next week.
We went back and forth on whether to keep the car and drive to Switzerland. We would have had to buy train tickets everyday to leave Wengen and we would have had to pay to park the car in Lauterbrunn. I am glad we elected to take the train instead. We purchased a Swiss Travel Pass and ended up using it more than we expected due to the weather.
