If you are looking for great snorkeling Roatan is the place to go.
Roatan has the largest barrier reef in the Caribbean. It is the second largest worldwide after the Great Barrier Reef in Australia. Roatan is located about 40 miles off the coast of Honduras.
Most people’s first experience of Roatan is by cruise ship. If arriving by cruise ship, walk out of the terminal and grab a taxi to West Bay Beach. If you don’t have snorkeling gear don’t worry, you can rent it on the beach.
TIP: Always check with the driver prior to getting into the cab about the rate per person and is it for dollars or Lempiras.
Usually the taxi drops people off at Bananarama Beach Resort. You can rent chairs from there or just turn left and walk towards Infinity Bay. Walk to the other side of the pier (see picture below). Lay your towels on the beach and enter the water around Infinity Bay. There is more snorkeling further down, but we found it was better in front of Infinity Bay.
The reef is close to the shore. You literally walk in and swim a 30 yards and the reef is right in front of you.
This is the beach in front of Infinity Bay from the water.
Swim out where you will see others snorkeling or head to the white buoy. In the water there is a marker pointing in the direction to follow.
And sometimes you will see divers below.
