If you have ever been to Cayman Islands, you know how expensive it is.
Trying to find a hotel which would not cost a fortune lead us to stay at the Sunshine Suites Resort. A the time of our visit in July 2014, the Cayman Island dollar was equal to $1.25 US. Costing us 25% more, which adds up very quickly.
The hotel offers an efficiency room or a one bedroom unit. Since it was only the two of us and we did not plan on being in the room much, we chose an efficiency room. The room consists of a refrigerator and stove top. There were cups, bowls, wine glasses, plates and silverware along with dish soap to wash any dishes. If you plan on cooking, you might want to check with the hotel to see if they have what you need to cook with, as my room did not have many pots and pans. We always go to the store and purchase food as well as bring snacks and other items from home to enjoy in the room and keep expenses down. We usually only eat one meal out a day.
The hotel is located one block from the beach (about a 5 minute walk). You have to cross the street to get to the beach. There are plenty of restaurants within walking distance from the hotel. We stayed here on a previous trip and enjoyed our stay. It was a no brainer for us to return to this hotel.
Breakfast is provided, which included cereal, danish, fruit, oatmeal, juice, water, coffee and tea. This is a great savings, as breakfast in Cayman Islands is very pricey.
We went to Fosters Grocery Store (which is only a couple blocks away) on our first day for some supplies for the week. The cost of groceries are a little higher than at home. Even though you could walk to the store from the hotel, we drove the car to avoid carrying our groceries back in the heat. I did not want my ice cream to melt!!! There is no need to buy bottle water as you can drink the water from the tap, which is a savings.
TIP: Make sure you take your own bag for groceries, as they charge you for the plastic bags. The grocery stores are closed on Sunday so plan accordingly.
A couple of weeks before our trip, I emailed Sunshine Suites and asked for a quiet location on a high floor. I advised them that we were celebrating our anniversary and were looking forward to our return visit with them.
When we arrived, they gave us a quiet location on the second floor and a bottle of wine, along with a note for our anniversary. That was a very nice touch. The customer service during our stay was excellent. We had problems with our AC, which was quickly fixed when we reported it. We never had a problem having our room cleaned. We requested extra towels, and they quickly delivered them to us. They always made the room up when we were out. The maids did a great job during our stay.
Chairs are provided by the hotel on a first come first serve basis to take to the beach. We never used them as it was just one more thing to carry. Instead I brought a raft with us, which I read about on Trip Advisor. It was the best tip, as we enjoyed using the raft every day. It’s very relaxing way to spend time in the water when we were not snorkeling. Sometimes I would just lay on the raft, and J would snorkel. It will now be added to my packing list for things to take for a beach vacation.
If you are a repeat visitor to Sunshine Suites, they offer a “repeat guest discount” plus food and beverage credit at the Sunshine Grill when you book directly with them.
